UCAS for Americans: How to Apply to UK Universities
Current UCAS guidance for U.S. students applying to UK universities.
UCAS in a nutshell
- Most UK undergraduate applications are submitted through UCAS.
- An undergraduate application can include up to five choices.
- For 2026 entry onward, the personal statement uses three structured questions rather than one long essay.
The three questions
- Why do you want to study this course or subject?
- How have your qualifications and studies helped you prepare?
- What else have you done outside formal education, and why is it useful preparation?
Why U.S. students need to plan differently
UK admissions are generally more course-focused than U.S. admissions. Applicants should pay close attention to published subject and qualification requirements for the exact course.
