How Americans Apply to Universities in Ireland
Ireland can feel familiar to U.S. families, but non-EU applicants need to check whether the application goes through CAO or directly to the institution.
CAO is central—but not universal for U.S. applicants
The Central Applications Office processes applications for many undergraduate programs. The 2026 CAO guidance also warns that applicants who have resided outside the EU/UK may be required to apply directly to some higher-education institutions.
Documents matter
Applicants presenting qualifications other than the Irish Leaving Certificate need to provide supporting academic documentation. Requirements should be checked with each institution.
Pathways approach
We identify the correct application route for each target program, compare the student's U.S. credentials to the institution's requirements, and build the timeline around the earliest deadline in the list.
Official resources
Admissions rules change. We use official sources as the starting point and verify requirements with the individual university or program.
