How Many APs Do You Need for European Universities?
There is no Europe-wide AP requirement. The right AP plan depends on the target country, university, degree and student's other credentials.
Why “How many APs?” has no single answer
European universities do not share one admissions rule for U.S. applicants. Some institutions evaluate the overall diploma, some rely heavily on AP exams or IB results, and others publish subject-specific requirements.
Germany shows why specifics matter
DAAD states that a U.S. high school diploma alone is generally not sufficient for direct admission to a German university. AP examinations or prior university study can materially affect the route to eligibility; otherwise a Studienkolleg may be needed.
In the Netherlands, the institution decides
Dutch institutions set their own admission requirements and make the final recognition decision, often with Nuffic guidance on foreign qualifications.
Plan backward from the target program
Instead of collecting APs for the sake of quantity, identify likely countries and subjects early, then choose courses and exams that preserve the student's strongest options.
