Applying to University in Ireland from the U.S.: CAO Explained

In our work, we usually begin with the university's own admissions office and published international-student requirements. If that university then requires a national portal, registration system, credential service or pre-enrollment step, we build it into the application plan. The portal supports the application; it does not replace checking the university itself.
CAO is the central application system for many courses
CAO processes applications to many undergraduate programs in Ireland. Applicants with qualifications other than the Irish Leaving Certificate must complete the relevant qualification sections and provide supporting documents.
Residence outside the EU can change the route
The 2026 CAO Handbook specifically warns that applicants who have resided outside the EU may be required to apply directly to some institutions. That is why American families should verify the route with each university.
Do not duplicate applications
CAO tells applicants not to submit more than one CAO application. If a university requires a direct non-EU application, follow that institution’s instructions rather than creating a second CAO account.
